The First Fighting Squadron VF-34

In early 1944 the US Navy assembled an untrained and ill-prepared fighter squadron and shipped it for immediate action in the final stage of Operation Cartwheel. This is the story of the first Fighting Squadron 34.

“A Thousand Bombers, or One Battleship”

The Battle of the East China Sea. "Nearly all [Beast] stories depend for their success on Jack killing the Giant, Beowulf or St. George slaying the Dragon... That is their inner grammar, and the whole shape of the story leads towards it." - A.N. Wilson

Shades of Grey

In this unusual piece I make the argument for why I've painted my in-progress USN Helldiver in a somewhat unconventional scheme.

Earning Their Stripes

How does a squadron of trainee pilots return to base in the event bad weather when they don't have radios in their aircraft? The recall bird goes up; here's mine.

The “Convertible” F-14D of USN’s VF-213 “The Black Lions”

Something a little different; a jet for one thing. However, this one is a little lighthearted compared to most and I hope you enjoy it.

CV-9 USS Essex & AVG-83, March-August 1945

"I often think of 409 at the bottom of the Pacific with some of my personal gear aboard. After all this time there is probably nothing left..."

Moving right along with the airframe, it’s time now for a flat coat and then some weathering. The raised surface details mean no wash is required on this one so straight to making George a bit grubby.
To be honest, I’m not particularly enjoying this one. The scale is a bit small at 1/72 and it’s an old tool and fit/finish just isn’t doing anything for me. Nonetheless progress continues with the gloss coat and most of the decals done.
My No.460 Sqd RAAF Lancaster is starting to look the part. Today I applied the topside camo freehand. I’m very happy with how my new Iwata HB-BH airbrush performed and equally happy with my first use of Hataka Red Line paints. A successful day!
I never was happy with the original photos of this one so I retook a few with a new lens. I think these are much better, though hi-res didn’t do me any favours with the paint job!
My VF-34 Grumman F6F-3 has had its glamour shoot and the article is posted to the main site (link in bio). The Eduard kit is a joy to build, and I’m pleased with the result.
Time to start! I’m excited to begin my Lancaster - I’ll be building this one out of the box as G-George from No.460 Squadron RAAF.
